Bryan Polite, tribal chairman of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, announced Thursday that the annual Shinnecock Powwow will once again be open to all, after two years in which it was closed to the public.
The Shinnecocks' 76th powwow is planned for Friday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 5 — Labor Day weekend. It typically attracts thousands of visitors — and many members of other tribal nations — to take in traditional music, singing, dancing, food, and other aspects of the Shinnecock and tribal culture. There will also be about a hundred artists and artisans from all over the American continent on hand selling their work and sharing their stories.
"We are so excited to share our culture and beautiful powwow grounds with everyone again!" Mr. Polite said in his Facebook announcement.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for children, senior citizens, and military personnel. Children under 5 get in free. The powwow is drug and alcohol-free, and pets except for service animals are prohibited. Additional information can be found on the Shinnecocks' website here.
