A Day to Discard Pollutants Safely

Thu, 06/15/2023 - 06:56

Saturday is Stop Throwing Out Pollutants Day at the East Hampton Recycling Center on Springs-Fireplace Road. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., household hazardous waste materials can be dropped off for safe disposal. These include aerosol cans, ammonia and antifreeze, batteries, bleach, insect killers, degreasers and disinfectants, weed killers, varnish, wood polishes and preservatives, solvents, kerosine, oil-based paints, oven cleaners, and photography chemicals, along with many other items.

The town's energy and sustainability committee, which is sponsoring the day, advises wearing rubber gloves when handling the items for disposal. The committee notes that chemicals that could react with each other should be kept separate in transport, and that nothing hazardous should be left in a hot vehicle for prolonged periods. Caps and lids should be tightened before transport.
