The Shinnecock Powwow will run from tomorrow through Monday at the nation's powwow grounds on West Church Street on the Shinnecock Reservation. One of the largest Native American gatherings on the East Coast, the powwow draws participants from all over the Americas for three and a half days of competitive and ceremonial dancing, music, entertainment, prayers, and food.

There will be vendors selling Native American arts and crafts, and "cultural enrichment and the opportunity for cultural education abound as Native American representatives from every region are available to demonstrate and share their stories to all who ask," according to the nation's website.

The powwow begins at 3 p.m. tomorrow, and the first grand entry of dancers from far and wide is at 7 p.m. Grand entry is repeated on Saturday and Sunday at 12:30 and 7 p.m., and gates open at 10 a.m. on those days. The festivities come to a close on Monday evening, when at 6 prizes are awarded to competing drummers and dancers.

The entry fee is $20 per day for people 10 to 65, or $10 for children 5 to 10, senior citizens, and those with military IDs, payable at the gate by cash or card or online at bit.ly/45Pil8o with an additional service fee. Children 4 and under can attend for free. More details can be found at shinnecock-nsn.gov/annual-powwow.

But despite himself, he came face to face with both earlier this week at the Mulford Farm, where the East Hampton Historical Society is putting his ikeness to work to tell the story of the role the farm’s owner, Col. David Mulford, played in the leadup to the 1776 Battle of Long Island, and of his fate during the region’s subsequent occupation by the British.
