East Hampton Town will accept pharmaceuticals that are outdated or no longer needed on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Town Hall. At the same time, the town will offer free paper shredding, giving residents a chance to safely get rid of documents that contain sensitive personal information.
The Drug Take-Back Day is part of an “initiative to combat the misuse of prescription drugs.” The drop box will be set up in the parking lot behind Town Hall. Prescription and over-the-counter pills for people or pets will be accepted. They need not be removed from their containers. Liquid medications, syringes, and business or professional waste will not be accepted.
Those unable to take advantage on Saturday can dispose of medications year round at drop boxes at town police headquarters in Wainscott and the Montauk precinct, at village police headquarters on Cedar Street, at the senior citizens center on Springs-Fireplace Road, and at White’s Apothecary in East Hampton.
Town residents can take up to three boxes of documents to be shredded on a first-come-first-served basis. The boxes should contain only paper, with no plastic bags or binders, but paperclips and staples need not be removed.
“This event is an opportunity to declutter while taking crucial steps to protect your identity,” Chief Michael Sarlo of the town police said in an announcement. “Safely shredding sensitive information helps prevent identity theft and ensures your private details are handled securely.”
