An Evening of Stargazing

Thu, 06/27/2024 - 09:29

The South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton will host "What's Up in the Sky?" on Thursday night at 7. This summer, the moon will cover Spica, one of the brightest stars, and Jupiter and Mars will "rendezvous" in the sky.

William Francis Taylor, the Hamptons Observatory's senior educator, will share how to view these solar spectacles, as well as summer constellations such as Sagittarius and Cygnus. The evening will conclude with outdoor stargazing, weather permitting. A Zoom option is also available, with a link at sofo.org.

John Shemilt, a purple martin expert, will be on hand on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. to show off "the colony of man-made gourds that house SoFo's newest population of purple martins," according to the museum, allowing visitors to see the newly laid eggs. The fee is $15 for adults, $10 for children. Members can take part for free.

A Bonac Airman Behind Enemy Lines

Staff Sgt. Harold Chapman was at the helm of a rapidly descending B-17 Flying Fortress. He was not a pilot. In fact, Chappie, as he was known, had just watched the pilot jump from the plane, his parachute failing to open. Hoping to avoid the pilot’s fate, Chappie was attempting to land the plane himself, according to his son, Rick Chapman of East Hampton. He was the last man aboard.

‘At War With Empty Hands’ in Georgia

In the country of Georgia, citizens are standing up to the government in the wake of a new law they feel runs counter to democracy. At the center of the conflict in Georgia is an Amagansett woman, Tsisnami (Sissy) Sakvarlishvili, who has been a leader and organizer of protests for democracy and has even landed in court, facing sanctions for her work.
