Silent Art Auction for Kayla Kearney This Weekend

Fri, 05/09/2025 - 13:55

An art auction this weekend at the Gardiner Mill Cottage Gallery in East Hampton Village will benefit Kayla Kearney, a young Springs woman and aspiring artist who endured more than eight months of hospitalization, surgeries, and physical therapy stemming from a tumor on her pituitary gland that turned out to be a far more serious condition.

Some 75 artworks, including vintage paintings donated by private collectors, organizations, and dealers, will be part of the silent auction, Art for KK, on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. But more donations from artists will be welcomed. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Kearney family, said Terry Wallace, executive director of the gallery, which is at 36 James Lane.

There are works "at some really great prices by some very good artists," Mr. Wallace said on Friday.

Ms. Kearney, 21, was diagnosed in December 2023 with a large tumor on her pituitary gland. In January 2024 she underwent what was expected to be a routine surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital to remove the tumor. Instead, she was diagnosed with a paraganglioma, a type of neuroendocrine tumor that attaches to the blood vessels. It resulted in four strokes and swelling and warranted a medically induced coma.

Ms. Kearney did not get home to Springs until the late summer of 2024, returning to streets lined with friends and well-wishers.

A Newsletter on Being a Jew in Today’s America

One of the essential roles of religion, Rabbi Jan Uhrbach of the Bridge Shul in Bridgehampton said this week, is to “help us hold onto our humanity, and remind us of the higher values that go beyond money and power and position and all of those things, in a time when the values that I hold dear are not only being violated, they’re being rejected as values.”

Item of the Week: The Hemerocallis Garden, 1962

Hemerocallis may be an unfamiliar term, but the garden adjacent to Clinton Academy once bore the name. This photo shows the gate to the garden some two decades after its establishment in 1941.
