The number of Covid-19 hospitalizations in Suffolk County decreased by 54 on Thursday, marking the second straight day of declines after a two-day rise earlier this week. "Hopefully this means we're back on our downward trend," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone at his daily briefing.

For the previous two days, the county had not provided an update on the total number of deaths, which, on Tuesday, was 1,296. New York State has since provided its most accurate fatality count to date, said Mr. Bellone, one that includes 226 newly confirmed deaths at nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the county. The overall total now stands at 1,547.

The number of patients in intensive care units rose by 6 to 301, and 88 people were discharged.

New confirmed cases of the virus rose by 804 to a total of 39,789, which includes 3,531 people who had not been previously tested but were shown to have contracted it via antibody tests.

The county reported 250 confirmed Covid-19 cases in East Hampton Town as of Thursday afternoon, 837 in Southampton Town, 557 in Riverhead, and 7 on Shelter Island.
