President-elect Donald Trump has named former First Congressional District Representative Lee Zeldin as his choice to head the Environmental Protection Agency, saying he "will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet."

Lee Zeldin, who represented New York’s First Congressional District from 2015 through 2022 and was the Republican Party’s nominee for governor of New York in the November election, has launched a political action committee to support Republican candidates “who are committed to advancing" his "efforts to grow the diverse coalition of first-time Republican voters” who helped to make the race for governor so close in 2022.

Unofficial results have Gov. Kathy Hochul defeating Republican Representative Lee Zeldin with 52.7 percent of the vote in a contest that became tighter than expected in the final lead-up to the election. Mr. Zeldin conceded on Wednesday afternoon.

As Representative Lee Zeldin of New York’s First Congressional District touts the website RealClearPolitics’ status change of his campaign for governor of New York from “leans Democratic” to “tossup,” his opponent, Gov. Kathy Hochul, is emphasizing Mr. Zeldin’s role in attempting to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election.

Ever since he first appeared on the political scene, Lee Zeldin, the long-shot Republican nominee facing New York Gov. Kathy Hochul in the November election, has consistently pointed to his military record among his qualifications.

Following his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, 22 active and retired lawyers, most of them Representative Lee Zeldin's constituents, filed a complaint with the Attorney Grievance Committee for the Supreme Court, Appellate Division, in Albany, charging violation of "the most fundamental ethics rules."

Those arriving at the Montauk Firehouse on Sunday for the political debate sponsored by Concerned Citizens of Montauk had no doubt that State Senator Lee Zeldin was going to be there. Dozens of Zeldin for Congress signs were being waved at the entrance and a big bus in the parking lot carried the message. Once inside, the audience was peppered by those wearing Zeldin for Congress T-shirts. The event was well attended, with more than 100 prospective voters on hand.

Representative Tim Bishop and his challenger, State Senator Lee Zeldin, who are engaged in what is expected to be a close contest for New York’s First Congressional District, will meet a number of times over the next week — twice in East Hampton Town.

On paper it might seem a dubious proposition, a 28-year-old lawyer opposing a three-term congressman with little but his status as an Iraq war veteran to recommend him. Yet Lee Zeldin is running a spirited outsider campaign against Representative Tim Bishop nonetheless. 

“We need to send a bulldog to Washington, not a lapdog, and not a lapdog for Nancy Pelosi’s misguided agenda,” Lee Zeldin said on Monday, announcing his candidacy for United States representative.
