Thank You, MontaukMontaukDecember 14, 2015To the Editor,Thank you, Montauk! Thank you emergency medical technicians, Montauk medical, the citizens committee, post office, the library, and all. The people who wrote or called or visited or gave me kind words or hugs on the street. Hy loved Montauk, and I have found that Montauk loved him as well. He liked to say about the people in Montauk, “If you sneeze in Montauk, everyone will offer you a handkerchief.” I want to share one anecdote with you. Hy had never spoken at the Veterans Day service at the playhouse, but this year he decided, since he was one of the last remaining World War II veterans in Montauk, he would say a few words. When the ceremony was over and folks were leaving to get refreshments, I turned to get Hy and there I saw a line of scouts waiting to shake his hand and thank him for his service. He was so moved. Thank you, scouts, and thank you, Montauk. ARLENE BRODSKYYou Are the HeroesSag HarborDecember 7, 2015To the Editor,I am grateful to be alive today. Two weeks ago I was working in East Hampton. Just a regular day at work driving to a client’s house in East Hampton. Before you know it I was medically in big trouble. I parked my truck and a man across the street saw I was in trouble. He immediately called the East Hampton Village ambulance and within two minutes the village police responded to the scene. The ambulance quickly arrived and immediately started working on me. Their professionalism and genuine care was so obvious. They transported me to the East Hampton Airport and I was flown to Stony Brook. I missed the ride as I was unconscious. I had heart surgery and am still recovering, slowly but steadily. Because of the actions of that man, the police, and most of all the ambulance crew, I would not be here today. Because of them I can still be a dad, a husband, a grandfather, and a friend to many. To Frank Milza, Nick Calace, Sandy Vorpahl, Paul Mangio, Suzy Dayton, Rosita Medler, and Pat Ryan, we all thank you. You are the heroes who selflessly serve this wonderful community in which we live. Without you there would be no community. From the bottom of my heart — wait a minute — with all of my heart, thank you.TOM MACA Nice Holiday GiftSpringsDecember 9, 2015Dear David,The nature preserve committee thanks East Hampton Town Highway Superintendent Steve Lynch and his crew for removing the dead trees from the Springs-Fireplace side of the Pussy’s Pond Nature Preserve. We also thank Supervisor Larry Cantwell and the town board for passing the resolution that allowed Mr. Lynch to do this work. The cleanup revealed several native American hollies that had been struggling to grow around fallen trees. What a nice holiday gift!ZACHARY COHENChairmanDelightful EveningEast HamptonDecember 14, 2015To the Editor, What a delightful evening was had by members of the Senior Citizens Center at the American Legion Hall in Amagansett on Friday, Dec. 11. The East Hampton Site Council provided us with a delicious menu served by an amicable staff from the Senior Citizens Center as we sang and danced to a wide selection of memorable songs throughout the decades. Thank you all so very much and sending blessings to you through the holidays and on into 2016.With warmest wishes, SUSAN C. FLAHERTYChristmas DinnerEast HamptonDecember 13, 2015Dear Editor:The seniors would like to thank the Springs firemen and women for the Christmas dinner they gave us, and also all the young people who served us.We are lucky to live in this wonderful community.JULIA KAYSERA Tremendous NeedEast HamptonDecember 14, 2015Dear Mr. Rattray, On Sunday, the Springs Fire Department made available delicious holiday dinners for delivery to clients of East Hampton Meals on Wheels and their family members or caregivers who were unable to attend the dinner at the firehouse. In fact, they donated 30 turkey dinners and 22 ham dinners to Meals on Wheels alone. This service filled a tremendous need in our community, because the clients who receive these dinners are homebound and unable to shop or cook special holiday meals for themselves or for their families. We heartily thank all members of the Springs Fire Department who skillfully coordinated the event with our organization as they have done for many years, and who gave so generously of their time and energy to make this holiday season pleasurable for many individuals. We are thankful to live in a community in which so many organizations and individuals are concerned for the needs of their neighbors.Thank you again, Springs Fire Department!FRANK EIPPERActing PresidentChristmas PresentAmagansettDecember 12, 2015David: I am sure that Ms. Kathryn Bermudez didn’t plan to give all the readers of The Star’s front-page story “Big Differences in Small Packages” an early Christmas present, but she did. When one read of how she and her husband and 4-year-old daughter drove to a little town in Texas to deliver boxes of clothes she and her colleagues collected here in East Hampton to women and children asylum-seekers, you just felt good and smiled. Her story, when contrasted with the stupid scurrilous statements of Donald Trump and others, reminds us that the overwhelming majority of Americans are Americans. I am sure I speak for many others when I thank you and your colleagues for your dedication, ask if we can help, and lastly wish you all a happy and healthy New Year.IRVING HIRSCHBERG
