Glenn Walter Haab

Thu, 07/16/2020 - 15:13

Glenn Walter Haab of Springs, a former charter boat captain in Montauk and longtime softball league umpire in East Hampton, died on Monday at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. He was 71 and had complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

A 1966 graduate of Bayport High School, Mr. Haab went on to a career as a charter boat mate, and by the early 1980s he was captaining boats in Montauk. In the late 1980s, when his daughters were playing Lassie League softball in East Hampton, he began working as an umpire. He continued in that role through the spring of 2019.

Born on July 20, 1948, in Port Jefferson to Walter Haab and the former Constance Laidlaw, he married Deborah Ann Card of Apalachin, N.Y., in December of 1975. Ms. Haab, who is the superintendent of the Wainscott School District, survives.

Mr. Haab enjoyed his dogs, the outdoors, carpentry, walking, and spending time with his family, especially his five grandchildren.

In addition to his wife of nearly 45 years and his grandchildren, Mr. Haab's mother, who lives in Bayport, survives him. Two daughters, Jessica Connors of Pulaski, N.Y., and Denise Calandrillo of Franklin, N.J., and a sister, Christine Mars of Bayport, survive as well.

Visiting hours are today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
