Nov. 5, 1943 - Dec. 16, 2021

Linda M. Miller, who was known for her community involvement, her helping hand, and her smile, died of lung cancer at home in Springs on Dec. 16. She was 78.

Ms. Miller was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a deacon at the East Hampton Presbyterian Church. She volunteered with the Lost Tribe of Accabonac, and after the death of one of her grandchildren, Matthew Lester, at the age of 17 in 2017, she became involved with the East Hampton Historical Farm Museum.

She was born at Southampton Hospital on Nov. 5, 1943, to Frederick P. Lester and the former Phyllis C. Hiscock. She graduated from East Hampton High School in 1961, and then took her first job as an operator with the New York Telephone Company, where her mother had worked. She also worked at Rowe’s Pharmacy and Sears before becoming a legislative secretary to the East Hampton Town Board, a position she held for 20 years until retirement.

In 1962, she married Lawrence L. Miller, whom she met while he was stationed in Montauk with the Coast Guard. Mr. Miller died in 2008.

She enjoyed passing the time with her friends at the East Hampton Senior Citizens Center and watching and feeding birds.

Ms. Miller is survived by three children, Dana Lester and Jeff Miller, both of Springs, and Leslie Labrozzi of Sag Harbor. Four grandchildren, Meredith Lester, Daniel Labrozzi, Gabrielle Miller, and Rachel Newcomb, also survive. A brother, Philip Lester, died before her. She leaves another brother, Fred Lester of Springs, and six nieces and a nephew.

Ms. Miller was cremated; her ashes are to be buried alongside her husband’s. A memorial service will take place in the spring. Her family has suggested memorial donations to the East Hampton Presbyterian Church at 120 Main Street, the Springs Fire Department Benevolent Association, in care of the Fire Department at 179 Fort Pond Boulevard, East Hampton 11937, or East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach 11978.

Deep History in Sag Harbor Headstones’ Restoration

While Captain Beebee’s headstone now sits pristine atop the hill next to the Old Whalers Church, the rest of the family’s six plots sit in disrepair. Recently, however, the museum received a $10,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, which will allow for the restoration of the remaining headstones.
