Oct. 28, 1955 - April 6, 2022

Happiest when he was skiing and spending time with his family, Richard Janis of East Hampton also enjoyed volunteering to coach his daughters’ softball games and was thrilled with his recent “promotion to grandfather” with the birth of his first grandson, Cooper.

He was “ever present” for his family, and “couldn’t wait for the day Cooper got on skis for the first time,” his family wrote.

Mr. Janis died unexpectedly at home on April 6. He was 66.

He was born in Brooklyn on Oct. 28, 1955, to Leon and Helen Janis. He grew up in Babylon and in 1983 graduated from Northeastern University in Boston. In June of 1986, he married Suzanne Turnbull, who survives him. The couple moved five years later to East Hampton, raising three daughters here.

Mr. Janis was the dockmaster at the Montauk Lake Club and Marina, a position he held since 2016.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children, Emily Janis of Bozeman, Mont., Elizabeth Janis of Brooklyn, and Meredith Janis of East Hampton. He also leaves his grandson, Cooper Ruth Janis; his mother, who lives in Babylon; a brother, Michael Janis of San Francisco, and a sister, Christine Janis of New Haven, Conn. He also leaves behind Yogi, his beloved dog.

A graveside service for Mr. Janis was held on Monday at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery on Cedar Street. Condolences for his family can be shared in care of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home, online at yardleypino.com.
