Anthony Janssen, who was chief of the Montauk Fire Department in 1981 and 1982, a volunteer firefighter for 35 years, and an ambulance driver for 15, died at Catholic Health Initiatives’ St. Vincent Hospital in Hot Springs, Ark., on April 24. A resident of Hot Springs since 2016, he was 85 and had been ill for two months.
Mr. Janssen was also a veteran of the Air Force, having been stationed in Maine from 1956 to 1960, and then had a 30-year career with the New York Telephone Company.
He was born in Paterson, N.J., on March 4, 1938, to Anthony Joseph Janssen and the former Mina Bauer. He grew up in Hawthorne, N.J., and graduated from high school there.
Mr. Janssen was married twice; his children survive. They are Kim Clark of Royal, Ark., Christian Janssen of Little Rock, Dawn Stavola of Montauk, and Michelle VonBargen of Bayville.
An enthusiastic fisherman, he captained private fishing boats out of Montauk for 10 years. The family said he also enjoyed golfing and traveling.
In addition to his children, he leaves a sister, Carole Taite of Stuart, Fla., nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Janssen was cremated. A celebration of his life is planned in the future.
