Word has been received of the death of Louise Demmers Carlson on Oct. 17 in Eugene, Ore. Mrs. Carlson, who was 98, lived in East Hampton for many years with her first husband, Anton (Tony) Demmers.
The couple moved here in 1958. Mr. Demmers was the compositor for The East Hampton Star from 1958 until his retirement in 1992, arranging the type for stories that would be printed in the newspaper.
During her years here, she was an enthusiastic reader and library patron. “She had a sisterhood of close friends in East Hampton,” her daughter, Linda Demmers, wrote. Mr. Demmers died in 1994; the couple had been married for 48 years.
In 1999, she moved to Eugene, “where she learned to play bridge, cheered for the Oregon Ducks, and traveled extensively.” In her later years, she listened to audiobooks provided by the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled. She married Ernest Lyle Carlson in March 2000. He died in 2003.
Born Louise Anna Russell in Brooklyn on May 5, 1926, the daughter of Elizabeth Gies and Robert Victor Russell, she grew up in that borough. After she and Mr. Demmers were married, they lived in Bayport and Sayville before settling in East Hampton.
She is survived by a son, James Demmers of Eugene, and his wife, Lynette Demmers, by a daughter, Linda Demmers of Los Angeles, and by a granddaughter, Isabel Bartel, also of Los Angeles, and her husband, Wyatt Bartel.
She requested that there be no memorial service. Donations in her memory have been suggested to the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, online at loc.gov/nls/.
