Down a Ravine, Into a Tree

Thu, 05/09/2019 - 16:40

A 19-year-old was driving drunk when he crashed into a guardrail and went into a ravine in the early morning hours on Sunday, East Hampton Town police said.

Andres S. Quito was behind the wheel of a 2014 Toyota heading east on Montauk Highway when he crossed over into the westbound lane and hit a guardrail just west of Beech Street. After going into the ravine, the vehicle struck a tree. Police were called at 3:45 a.m.

Mr. Quito admitted he had consumed alcohol before the accident, according to an accident report. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving without a license, and several traffic violations.

The Montauk Fire Department ambulance transported him to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, as he complained of left knee pain and had minor lacerations to his right and left wrists and hands.

East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky released him on his own recognizance.

Arthur J. Andrews, 54, of Long Beach was also arrested on a misdemeanor D.W.I. charge on Sunday. Police said they found his 2007 Toyota blocking the intersection at Treescape Drive and Springy Banks Road, on the wrong side of the stop line, just after 1 a.m. He was also using his cellphone, which is illegal. Police said that when they spoke to him, he appeared intoxicated and performed poorly on field sobriety tests.

Justice Tekulsky released him on his own recognizance.
