Indicted on Cocaine Charges

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:11

A Montauk man arrested Sept. 30 after a routine traffic stop on the hamlet’s Main Street was indicted by a grand jury on drug trafficking charges last Thursday.

Alimdzkan D. Angeles-Abreu, 37, allegedly had about an ounce and a half of cocaine in the trunk of the Honda Acura he was driving when police pulled him over. They reported that there were no working lights over the license plates. Mr. Angeles-Abreu is facing B felony charges, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, and possession of more than half an ounce of the narcotic.

Trevor M. Darrell of Fleming & Darrell, an East Hampton firm, who has been retained to defend him, entered a not-guilty plea to the possession charges as well as to a misdemeanor charge of possession of narcotic paraphernalia in the courtroom of Acting New York State Supreme Court Justice Mark Cohen in Riverside.

Police said they conducted the search with the defendant’s consent, initially turning up nothing inside the car. They then searched the trunk and reported finding a baseball-sized lump of cocaine.

Mr. Angeles-Abreu, unable to meet the $25,000 bail initially set in East Hampton Town Justice Court, has been in custody since his arrest. Bail was lowered to $10,000 during his arraigment yesterday in county court.

Another man arrested by an officer in Montauk on cocaine trafficking charges this summer was indicted in July and is due back in county court tomorrow. Gustavo Bonilla-Bonilla, 41, was allegedly selling the drug out of a 1997 Toyota Camry parked at Liars’ Saloon on the Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend. Mr. Bonilla-Bonilla did not notice, East Hampton Town police said, that he was parked in front of a marked patrol car. The officer noticed a stream of foot traffic between the bar and the car, leading to his  arrest.

Like Mr. Angeles-Abreu, he is facing a felony possession with intent to sell charge, but, unlike Mr. Angeles-Abreu, he is free on bail. He is being represented by the Legal Aid Society.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County
