Amagansett

A Westwood, Mass., man took a hard punch to the face from a stranger at the Stephen Talkhouse early Sunday morning, opening up a wound over his left eye. Alexander Owen told police he did not want to press charges against his assailant, who fled, but did want the incident documented. He declined the offer of an ambulance, saying he would take a taxi to Southampton Hospital if he felt he needed medical care.

A Range Rover parked at the Shore Drive West beach access in Lazy Point had a rear brake-light cover ripped off on the afternoon of June 27. Michael Sanford estimated a new one at $50.

East Hampton

A hybrid Trek mountain bike was stolen from the yard of a Wireless Road house on the night of June 27. Robert Frongillo described it as a model DS 8.4, which is designed for use both off-road and on. The stolen bike, which is black with grey trim and silver lettering, sells for about $900. Detectives have asked anyone with information leading to the bike’s recovery to call 631-537-7575.

East Hampton Village

White’s Pharmacy on Main Street received a visit from police on the morning of the Fourth after a Manhattan man reported his son missing. The boy was found hiding inside the pharmacy.

Police were called to CVS on Pantigo Road on the afternoon of June 27, where a dog, sans owner, was running through the aisles. An agent from Animal Control took the dog into custody.

After receiving a call telling her that her brother, who lives in East Hampton, had been kidnapped, a woman in Ecuador sent two Western Union money orders to Mexico City. The brother then called her to say he was fine and she had been scammed. Police were notified and interviewed the brother at Latin Express, a popular spot for wiring money abroad.

A Cove Hollow Road man received a call June 28 from a man claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service, who demanded that the homeowner wire money immediately. The resident recognized the call as a scam, hung up, and notified police.

A truck struck the bottom of the train trestle on North Main Street early last Thursday morning and drove away, leaving parts of its refrigeration unit behind. The trestle was not damaged.

Montauk

Overnight on Saturday, persons unknown removed two outside window screens from Gosman’s Restaurant, damaging them as well as the frames. Robert Gosman told police it did not appear that the vandals had gained access to the restaurant.

A thief rifled through an unlocked 2016 BMW parked on Galton Place, off West Lake Drive, on the night of June 26. Connie Brightwell-Auteri of Manhattan told police she was out $100 in cash and several identification documents, all of which were in the glove box.

The Surf Lodge saw an altercation between a patron and a bouncer after midnight Saturday. The patron called police, but left before they arrived, and the bouncer, Bastien Petite, said he did not want to press charges.

Trespassers partied in the backyard of a South Delphi Street house on the evening of June 27. Cynthia Edwards told police she found an empty bottle of wine and empty beer cans on the patio, and general disarray.

Sag Harbor

Julia Flint found the rear window of her late-model Jeep, parked overnight June 28 on Rysam Street, broken the next day. Nothing was taken from the vehicle, she told police. The object used to smash the window was not found.

Pamela Rodriguez accidentally locked her baby inside her car, engine running, Saturday morning. An officer reported that the air-conditioning was on, and the child was not in immediate danger. He was able to gain access to the car.

A Beach Avenue woman called police Saturday morning, expressing concern about a neighbor’s basketball hoop. Valerie Cuyjet said she was afraid youths playing around the hoop could be hit by a car. The owner of the hoop agreed to move it farther onto his property.

A little before midnight Saturday, Angelo Toscato reported that sometime in the past two hours, someone had slashed a tire on his 2012 Jeep, parked on Howard Street.

Early on the Fourth of July, an altercation in front of Murph’s Tavern on Division Street turned into a fight between two men, virtually in front of police headquarters. When an officer arrived the fireworks were over, with one man gone and the other declining to press charges.

Wainscott

A disagreement on June 24 between two motorists at the Beach Lane parking lot may have prompted one of them to retaliate with a bit of thievery. Kristin Knapp told police that the other driver, whose name was removed from the heavily blacked-out report, was upset with the way she parked her car. Thinking nothing of it, she went for a walk on the beach with a friend. When they returned, several items had been taken from her vehicle, including her iPhone 6. Police were able to locate the phone, which was still in the area, and recover the items, though from whom cannot be learned. Ms. Knapp declined to press charges.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County

East Hampton and Amagansett firefighters volunteered to head north last week to help fight a 5,000-acre wildfire in Orange County, N.Y., not once but twice, battling unfamiliar terrain to do so. “They fight fires completely differently than we do when we have a brush fire,” the Amagansett chief said.

Awards for Good Policing in Handgun Scuffle

“It could have gone worse. We’re lucky that I have officers here that weren’t shot,” said Police Chief Jeff Erickson at Friday’s East Hampton Village Board meeting. Chief Erickson was recognizing Sgt. Wayne Gauger and Officers John Clark and Robbie Greene for a traffic stop on Aug. 31 that turned into a scuffle and the eventual confiscation of an illegal gun.

A Three Mile Harbor Drive resident reported an online dating scam on the afternoon of Nov. 16. Somehow, said the 80-year-old man, a person on the dating platform had gotten his phone number and demanded $2,000 from him, threatening to tell his family he was using the site if he did not comply. Police told the man to block the number.
