Struck While in Crosswalk

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:12

A Montauk woman was critically injured Friday morning after being hit by an S.U.V. The victim, Mariana Guanga-Baculima, 32, was flown by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was listed in critical but stable condition.

The accident occurred near the west entrance to the hamlet, about a half-hour after sunrise. According to police, Robert Budesa, 64, also of Montauk, was driving a 2005 GMC Yukon east at a fairly low rate of speed. With the early-morning sun in his eyes, he stopped when he “heard a thump,” he told police, and got out of the car thinking he had struck a pedestrian crossing sign. Instead, he found Ms. Guanga-Baculima “on the roadway by his left tire.”

The area around the crosswalk, between the 7-Eleven and the I.G.A., was cordoned off by police as a detective photographed the scene.

A clerk at the 7-Eleven said Ms. Guanga-Baculima was an assistant manager there. Police concluded that she was crossing Montauk Main Street in the marked crosswalk, headed toward the store, when she was struck. Mr. Budesa was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

As of yesterday, Ms. Guanga-Baculima’s condition was said to be improving, according to East Hampton Town Det. Sgt. Greg Schaefer.

Another Friday-morning Montauk Highway accident, this time in Wainscott near Town Line Road, sent two more people to the hospital, with less serious injuries. Christian Taveras of Copiague, who will be 21 on Sunday, driving a 2008 Chevrolet work van, rear-ended another work van, a 2004 Ford driven by Jose E. Zhipson Cajamarca, 38, who has a Maryland driver’s license.

The Ford then struck a 2014 Mercedes Benz being driven by Robert David Haar, 64, of New York City. Both Mr. Zhipson Cajamarca and his passenger, Manuel Quiroga, “claimed injury,” the report says, and were taken to Southampton Hospital.

Mr. Taveras was cited for driving without a license and for following too closely.

A 2015 GMC collided with a tandem bicycle last Thursday evening on Main Street in Montauk near the Kirk Park Beach parking lot. Ali Charon, 39, of Maspeth, the driver of the GMC, told police she was turning right onto the highway and didn’t see the cyclists, who were traveling on the south shoulder.

The cyclists fell off their bike and suffered minor injuries, police said. Ryan Hickey, 20, of Smithtown, and Justine DeLuca, 19, hometown unknown, were taken to Southampton Hospital for treatment and later released.

No citations were issued.
