Swerving to the Shoulder

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:22

East Hampton Town police arrested a Sound Beach man on Pantigo Road in East Hampton on the afternoon of May 5, charging him with driving while intoxicated and without a valid license or registration, all misdemeanors.

Michael T. Dolson, 41, was driving a 2006 Ford west near Spring Close Highway at about 2:30 when he swerved onto the shoulder, police said, adding that he then performed poorly on all field sobriety tests. His license had been suspended in November 2012 for failure to answer a summons, and his vehicle registration had just been suspended, on April 27, for lack of insurance.

Mr. Dolson was held overnight for a morning arraignment before East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky, who released him on $250 bail.

Christian G. Carabajo, 23, of Springs was also charged with misdemeanor D.W.I. after he allegedly swerved into the oncoming lane on Monday at about 1:40 a.m. He was driving a 1997 Acura north on Springs Fireplace Road, near Old Springs Fireplace Road, when, according to police, he crossed the double yellow line and then, several times, over the white line onto the shoulder. Justice Lisa R. Rana arraigned him that morning and released him on $500 bail.

A Montauk woman was arrested in that hamlet on Monday on the same charge at around the same time. Theresa M. Czeczotka, 57, caught police attention when she made “an abrupt wide right turn onto Glenmore Avenue, causing her driver’s side tires to leave the pavement,” police reported. The officer also noted that she crossed into the opposite lane.

Justice Rana released her on her own recognizance later that day.

Koral D. Wurm, 27, of Sag Harbor was pulled over at Main and John Streets there, at 4:43 a.m. on Saturday. Police said she was driving her 2014 Hyundai Elantra without headlights. She performed poorly on several field sobriety tests, they said, and was charged with drunken driving. Later that morning, after arraignment in Sag Harbor Village Justice Court, she was released on her own recognizance.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
