Thieves Enter Unlocked Cars

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:37

Unlocked cars were rifled through, with money and other items reported stolen over a two-night period beginning on Feb. 11 in Amagansett and concluding the following night in Springs. According to East Hampton Town police, two vehicles parked outside Amagansett residences were entered but many more in Springs.

Matias Koch reported a Microsoft Surface 3 Laptop computer stolen from an unlocked 2005 Toyota Tacoma parked outside his Waters Edge house in the Albert’s Landing neighborhood. He valued it at $500. Two cars, a 2017 Subaru and a 2017 Ford pickup, which were parked outside a Windward Road residence, were entered between 11 p.m. on Feb. 11 and 7 a.m. the following morning, William Boscarino told police. The loss, however, was only about $5 in loose change.

In Springs the following night, Harrison Avenue was targeted. A 2012 Volvo owned by MaryEli Sarmiento and a 2017 Nissan belonging to Olga Cardona had been rummaged through with nothing taken. But Dakota Craine of Harrison Avenue had $50 in cash in her 2012 Jeep when she went to sleep that night and it was gone the next morning.

Also on Harrison Avenue, Ledi Diaz told police she had left $35 in cash and a woman’s wallet in her 2015 Nissan. Both were gone the next morning. Julie Megginson’s 2008 Jeep, however, also on Harrison Avenue, was damaged by a thief who took a knife from the console and cut into a car seat. The thief also made off with a pair of binoculars, valued at $150.

Other reports of vehicles in Springs having been entered came from Daniel Lester of Spruce Street, who is out $14 in loose change, and from Deborah Gherardi of Bonac Woods Lane, who said $5 was stolen from the glove box of her Toyota Tundra but that pennies in the car were left behind.

Capt. Chris Anderson has a standard warning for East Hampton Town residents: No matter what time of year, lock your cars at night.

It Was S.U.V. on S.U.V.

On June 23, a Subaru S.U.V. rear-ended a Toyota S.U.V. at Carl Fisher Plaza in Montauk. That evening, two other S.U.V.s collided in Wainscott and had to be towed away. And more news of the roads.

Driver Leaves Path of Destruction at Montauk Art Show

Early Sunday morning, it looked as if a small tornado had torn through the Montauk Green and the Montauk Artists Association Art Show. Instead, East Hampton Town police say the destruction — which wiped out the inventory of some participating artists — was caused by a drunken driver.
