Local Men Charged With D.W.I.

Thu, 10/01/2020 - 09:10

Two young East Hampton men were charged in recent weeks with driving while intoxicated.

At around 1 a.m. on Sept. 19, Christopher Schwagerl, 24, driving a 2010 Audi on Springs-Fireplace Road near North Main Street in East Hampton, was clocked at 55 miles per hour in a 30-m.p.h. zone, town police reported. After pulling him over and noting that there was "something hanging from his rearview mirror" that partially obstructed his view, police asked him to perform roadside sobriety tests, which he allegedly failed. Mr. Schwagerl was charged with drunken driving, a misdemeanor, and cited for a violation after police found pot in a plastic bag in the back of the car. He was held for a morning arraignment before Justice Steven Tekulsky, who released him on his own recognizance to await a future appearance in court.

Jackson Rafferty, 22, was stopped early on Sept. 24 on Beach Lane in Wainscott, just off Wainscott Main Street, where, police said, his 2008 Chevrolet had run into a fire hydrant. Mr. Rafferty kept going after police tried to flag him down, but they caught up with him on Sagg Road, where he was forced to stop when his engine failed. When officers approached, he was parked off the road and standing outside the car, which had both front-end and passenger-side damage. The driver was unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on the field test, police said. He was held for the remainder of the night and freed on his own recognizance following a court appearance in the morning.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
