Found Witness, Made Arrest

Thu, 01/09/2020 - 13:12

A Montauk man was arrested there on the evening of Dec. 27 after East Hampton Town police said he had intentionally broken the side-view mirror of a 2018 Range Rover.

A woman was inside the car, she told police, when Jason P. Hewitt, 33, began yelling at her to roll down the window. When she declined, and threatened to call police if did not leave her alone, he hit the passenger side mirror with his hand, shattering the glass. She drove away and met a police officer at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Old West Lake Drive.

Detective Sgt. Dan Toia said this week that the woman claimed not to know the man’s identity, but that she was able to give a description. Using surveillance footage, police found a witness who was able to identify Mr. Hewitt. He was arrested two days later, on Dec. 29, at his residence, and charged with criminal mischief in the third degree, a felony.

He was released on his own recognizance and will be arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court at a later date.

In Sag Harbor, Kaitlyn N. Kelly, 33, of East Hampton was charged with criminal trespass in the second degree, a misdemeanor, on Dec. 24. Police said she was found sleeping in an upstairs bedroom at a house on Elizabeth Street where she was not supposed to be. The arrest report noted that alcohol was involved. She will be arraigned in Sag Harbor Village Justice Court on Feb. 14.
