Going 74 in a 55 Zone

Thu, 03/17/2022 - 09:32

Christopher O’Neill of Long Island City, 41, was westbound on Montauk Highway on the evening of March 7 when East Hampton Town police pulled him over, near Beech Street. According to their report, not only had he been clocked at 74 miles per hour in a 55 m.p.h. zone, he had also crossed the double yellow lines multiple times as he streaked west. An officer noted the smell of alcohol on his breath, and Mr. O’Neill submitted to field sobriety tests, but performed poorly. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, held overnight, arraigned in Town Justice Court the next morning, and released on his own recognizance. He is due back in court on Wednesday.

Town police also reported that Roven S. Carpio-Chuchuca, a 19-year-old from East Hampton, was observed at about 7 a.m. on March 6 driving a white Chevrolet sedan off Town Lane, onto the grass, and into a tree. The car was still running, with the keys in the ignition, when the officer got there. Mr. Carpio-Chuchuca was unsteady on his feet and failed the road tests, according to the report. Charged with aggravated drunken driving, with a blood-alcohol level of over .08 percent, he was held throughout the day and overnight for a morning appearance in Justice Court. He too is due back in court on Wednesday.
