Swerved Over the Lines

Wed, 05/25/2022 - 18:43

East Hampton Town police lodged a felony charge of driving while intoxicated early Saturday morning against Julio Mejiaguncay of East Hampton, 37, after seeing his 2001 black Dodge swerving over the double lines on Springs-Fireplace Road, close to Old Fireplace Road in Springs. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests, they reported, and a Breathalyzer test registered an elevated blood-alcohol level.

After it was determined that Mr. Mejiaguncay had a prior drunken-driving conviction within the past 10 years, the misdemeanor charge was raised. He appeared later that morning before East Hampton Town Justice Lisa R. Rana and was released on his own recognizance. He is due back in East Hampton Justice Court today.

On Sunday at 3 a.m., on Route 27 near Hither Hills State Park in Montauk, police found a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado upended after hitting several trees. The driver, Kim Bailey, 42, of New York City, was standing behind the car, according to the report, “acting lethargic, lacking coordination,” and unable to form clear sentences or follow directions given during a field sobriety test. Police determined him to be suffering the effects of a drug, and he was arrested on a charge of impairment. He was given a blood test, the results of which are pending, and held until the morning. Mr. Bailey was to have been arraigned in Justice Court yesterday.
