Thu, 08/10/2023 - 09:25

East Hampton Town police arrested two men on Monday who are alleged to be responsible for the theft of hand tools from an unoccupied house on Harbor Boulevard in Springs.

Thomas F. Sallie IV of Shirley, 62, and Michael J. Reith of Eastport, 35, face felony charges of second-degree burglary. Mr. Sallie is additionally charged with second-degree criminal possession of stolen property, also a felony.

Police said the arrests followed a call from a Harbor Boulevard homeowner reporting that he saw two strangers on security camera footage inside the house at around noon.

"Responding officers located two men matching the description working at a home nearby," they said in a statement. "The two men were questioned by detectives before being charged in the incident. Hand tools stolen from the residence were later recovered."

Mr. Sallie and Mr. Reith were arraigned in Town Justice Court on Tuesday. They are to return there on Aug. 24. A Justice Court clerk said Tuesday that the two do not yet have legal representation.
