Train Canceled After Fire at Rail Yard

Thu, 08/24/2023 - 11:13

A fire broke out at the Montauk train yard on Edgemere Street on Sunday night, causing the westbound 7:42 p.m. train to be canceled.

In an email to The Star on Monday, the Long Island Rail Road characterized the blaze as “small” and said it was “quickly extinguished and nobody was injured.”

Detective Sgt. Ryan Hogan of the East Hampton Town Police Department said by phone on Tuesday that the Montauk Fire Department responded and put out the flames, and that the response was then turned over to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The likely cause, he said, was “an old generator that had a broken fuel seal.”
