Amagansett

A metal mirror was reported “ripped off the wall in the men’s restroom” at Albert’s Landing Beach on the night of July 30. Police notified the Parks Department and recorded the incident as criminal mischief.

East Hampton

Sara Smith, principal of East Hampton High School, reported a suspicious man on the track on July 24. Security had chased him off the premises. He will be charged with trespassing if he shows up again.

East Hampton Village

“Kids with a fishing net” were reported near Town Pond on the afternoon of July 31, and police went to check. One of the boys explained that he was using a pool net to retrieve a plastic bag from the pond, and he was allowed to proceed.

Near Stop and Shop on Friday afternoon, police spotted a man who appeared intoxicated approaching a bicycle, and told him he could not ride his bike in that condition. He complied, leaving the area on foot.

A swan, possibly the same one that was reported injured near Georgica Pond the week before last but was found by police to be okay, was called in for a wellness check on Saturday morning, this time near Stephen Hand’s Path. A wildlife rescuer was in the area and helped the “injured” swan.

Montauk

A customer at Salivar’s allegedly grew “combative” on the night of July 27 when security asked to mark his hand with a pen. “Escorted” through the parking lot, the man grabbed car handles, causing scrapes to his knees. After a medical evaluation, neither side wanted further police involvement.

Police released a report this week of a June 15 incident at Surf Lodge, where a man was found near the kitchen “having a seizure.” On the way to the hospital, he told paramedics he’d been punched in the face, and later requested that police take further action. The report ends there.

Dive Bar Pizza was the site of a fight early on the morning of July 28. Police found two men, one of whom was “on a bench in front of the bar bleeding from his mouth.” Security had asked them to leave for being “difficult” and “arguing” with staff, they told police, and a brawl followed, in which both of them were knocked to the ground. The remainder of the report was redacted.

A man reported his red single-gear bicycle stolen from Edgemere Street on the afternoon of July 30. He’d locked the bike to a street sign earlier, he told an officer, and the lock was undamaged, but the bike, which he valued at $300, was gone.

Sag Harbor

Madison Street was the site of an apparent car theft on the afternoon of July 30 when a man reported his Toyota Camry missing. He’d left it for about 90 minutes, he told police, who drove him around until they found it on Main Street, where he had forgotten he’d parked.

A man who was reported to be lying in the grass last Thursday evening near the Beacon restaurant at the yacht club told police he’d only had a few drinks and was “taking a breather in the grass” before continuing his walk home. The officer let him rest.

A couple who’d bought soup at Harbor Market Saturday afternoon opened the lid in their car soon after and the hot soup spilled over the woman in the passenger seat, causing burns. She was treated at Urgent Care in Bridgehampton, and police were called to document the incident.

Springs

The owner of Montoya Communications reported on Friday that a man had submitted a $598 check, a duplicate, which also bounced, plus a $15 processing fee. She’d called him, she told police, asking him to reimburse her for $613, but so far he had not done so.

Early on Saturday morning, police found a man sleeping in a car at Maidstone Park, with open containers in the back seat. He first said he didn’t speak English, but eventually a friend came and picked him up.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County

East Hampton and Amagansett firefighters volunteered to head north last week to help fight a 5,000-acre wildfire in Orange County, N.Y., not once but twice, battling unfamiliar terrain to do so. “They fight fires completely differently than we do when we have a brush fire,” the Amagansett chief said.

Awards for Good Policing in Handgun Scuffle

“It could have gone worse. We’re lucky that I have officers here that weren’t shot,” said Police Chief Jeff Erickson at Friday’s East Hampton Village Board meeting. Chief Erickson was recognizing Sgt. Wayne Gauger and Officers John Clark and Robbie Greene for a traffic stop on Aug. 31 that turned into a scuffle and the eventual confiscation of an illegal gun.
