East Hampton

A woman called police from Pantigo Place, where town offices are located, on the morning of Feb. 10, saying she was being harassed in the parking lot there by a man on a bicycle who was "circling her car" as she was trying to park. Officers found the man and warned him to leave the woman alone.

A Boatheaders Lane resident reported on Feb. 12 that a man had punched her in the face and otherwise assailed her. Police arrested the man, who was charged with harassment.

East Hampton Village

There was a report last Thursday of apparent identity theft. A man said he'd been told of suspicious activity in his bank account and given a number, which he called, to "fix" it. He was then instructed to buy four cash cards from CVS and told he'd be reimbursed. After he'd bought the cards and sent them as instructed, he told police, he realized it was a scam. His address was redacted in the official report.

Montauk

Following a Jan. 30 altercation, an employee of a bar on West Lake Drive told a man to leave and not return, and later called police, saying the man had threatened to "trash the bar." The same man had made threats against the bar on Facebook, the employee reported, saying that "cops can arrest" him. Police recorded the allegations.

Sag Harbor

A family member living in California has obtained a New York State driver's license using her address, a Hampton Street woman told police on Feb. 10. She has received several letters about it from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, she said, and wanted it documented.

A Denison Road resident told police Saturday afternoon that several pieces of her jewelry were missing from a locked storage room, which, she said, was broken into after a tenant was evicted in December. Later, she said, a caretaker found extensive property damage at the house, including the entry into the storage room. The homeowner was away until this month; upon returning she found a two-karat emerald ring, a Cartier bracelet, and diamond earrings from Tiffany & Co., together valued at about $10,000, all missing. She reported the theft, classified as grand larceny, to police for insurance purposes.

Police responded to a report of chickens running free on Rysam Street on Feb. 11, but found none.

On Sunday night, Sag Harbor officers assisting East Hampton Town police located a Suffolk Street man who was being sought for leaving the scene of a car accident. His car matched the description given to police, and was found to have heavy damage to its passenger-side door.

A construction crew working on a retaining wall on Lighthouse Lane on Monday damaged her fence, a neighbor complained to police that morning. At that same location, police responded to a separate complaint about construction work being done on a holiday, Presidents' Day. Officers instructed the crew to do whatever was needed to make both properties structurally safe and then stop all work. The matter has since been referred to the village building inspector.

Springs

On Feb. 12, a Camberly Road man reported seeing a man in a car "looking at houses through a pair of binoculars." When he approached the car, it sped away, he said, and police did not find any vehicle matching its description.

Valentine's Day was not a happy one for a Copeces Lane resident, who told police that day that her identity had been stolen, apparently through an old phone number associated with her Instagram account. Friends had informed her, she said, that the number had been texting them requesting money through Venmo or Zelle.

Police were called to Harrison Avenue on the evening of Feb. 16, where a man was accused of ripping apart a photo album and throwing the pieces around the house, which was not his. He was arrested and charged with harassment, a misdemeanor.

On Highland Boulevard, a cross street off Harrison Avenue, a man reported a trespasser "banging on his door" on Sunday afternoon. He did not open it and yelled at the man, whom he apparently recognized, to leave. Police found the intruder at his own house and told him to not go back to his neighbor's.

Wainscott

Police responded to a drunken brawl on Rolling Woods Court late last Thursday night, where a fight between two men had spilled over into a driveway. One of the two, bleeding from a punch in the face, pushed the other to the ground, "scratching his rib cage," according to the report. Both refused to press charges and declined medical attention.

A Torrent of Burglar Alarms

As many as 40 burglar alarms were triggered across both residential and commercial properties in East Hampton Town last week, in some places more than once in 24 hours.

A Sag Harbor woman reported a stranger in her backyard early Sunday morning. Police concluded that undisturbed snow on the ground suggested that nobody had entered her property. She then told the officer, “Maybe I didn’t see anyone, I just thought I did.”
