Film Fest Teases With a Preview of Its Offerings

The Hamptons International Film Festival will celebrate 25 years of films and other programs at this year’s festival over Columbus Day weekend.

Those attending should expect lots of star power, serious cinematic achievement, and some surprises. In order to build excitement for the weekend, the festival is already announcing a few of its films and events.

A United States premiere screening of “Breathe,” a film by Andy Serkis, starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, will screen on Oct. 8. It is an inspiring love story about a couple’s quest to conquer a disease.

The director of "LBJ," Rob Reiner, will participate in the festival’s A Conversation With . . . series. The film, which stars Woody Harrelson as the president, will also be shown.

Other films to be shown this year will include “After Louie,” “The Yellow Birds,” “Human Flow,” “The Square,” and “Oh Lucy!” 

Alan Cumming stars in “After Louie,” Vincent Gagliostro’s examination of survivor’s guilt during the height of the AIDS epidemic. “The Yellow Birds” by Alexandre Moors stars Toni Collette, Jennifer Aniston, Tye Sheridan, and Alden Ehrenreich. It follows two soldiers in the Iraq War. Mr. Cumming and Ms. Collette plan to attend the festival.

Ai Weiwei, the Chinese dissident and artist, directed “Human Flow,” which documents the global migrant crisis. “The Square,” directed by Ruben Ostlund and starring Elisabeth Moss, Claes Bang, and Dominic West, is set in the art world and won top honors at the Cannes Film Festival. Atsuko Hirayanagi’s “Oh Lucy!” is based on her award-winning short film about a woman who transforms her life.

In a press release, the festival’s artistic director, David Nugent, said, “This first group of films displays works that both explore the complexities of our world and some of the challenges we face, while also highlighting the resilience of the human spirit in facing such adversity.”

The festival is honoring Julie Andrews this year with a lifetime achievement award at its annual dinner, which it announced previously. It will screen “Victor/Victoria,” in which Ms. Andrews stars, on Oct. 7, with a post-screening conversation with Ms. Andrews and Alec Baldwin, who is a co-chairman of the festival.

This year’s selection of rising stars, the 10 Actors to Watch List, includes Timothée Chalamet, Hong Chau, Kiersey Clemons, Daveed Diggs, Ali Fazal, Daniel Kaluuya, Barry Keoghan, Danielle Macdonald, Kumail Nanjiani, and Grace Van Patten. Previous honorees include Oscar winners and nominees such as Mahershala Ali, Brie Larson, Lupita Nyong’o, Emma Stone, and Alicia Vikander.

The festival will be presented from Oct. 5 to 9. Passes and packages will be available for purchase beginning Sept. 5.
