Li-lan, an artist who has had a studio in Springs since the 1970s, celebrated the publication of a monograph, "The Art of Li-lan: A World Achieved" with text by Carter Ratcliff, a poet and art critic for Art in America, on Thursday night at the Rizzoli book store on 57th Street in Manhattan. The book has been published by Hudson Hills Press. The artist and her fans braved bitter temperatures to be at the book signing, which also marked the release of a special signed limited edition print of a work featured on the book's cover. In a profile of the artist for the Star in 2009, Jess Frost noted : "When initially observing one of Li-lan's oil on linen paintings, one's mind is quickly swept into the mysterious dialogue of her subject matter. The canvases are organized into various vignettes of culturally disparate architecture and scenery, often populated with arbitrary birds, insects, reptiles, and aircraft." A exhibition of her paintings will be on view at the Jason McCoy Gallery in New York City beginning April 3.
