SBS Film Students Discover Dogme in East Hampton

From May 13 to May 20, Stony Brook Southampton film students visited sites around East Hampton for a series of linked webisodes using techniques inspired by Dogme 95's ethos for a pared-down, anti-Hollywood approach to filmmaking. 

Bentley Heyman, Emily Lau, Evan Reeves, Helen Schreiner, and Ju Young Ra worked with Alec Sokolow, the screenwriter of films such as “Toy Story,” “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “Evan Almighty,” and “Money Talks”; Lenny Crooks, who worked with members of the original Dogme 95 movement in Denmark, and Magdalene Brandeis, associate director of the school's M.F.A. in film program.

Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, both directors in Denmark, started Dogme 95 in 1995 and came up with 10 vows of chastity including only natural lighting, no added sound or scores, and limited props. 

The program is now in its first full year following New York State approval.
