South Fork Represents at Golden Globes

The Golden Globes on Sunday included nominees, but not many winners, from the long list of part-time and full-time East End residents from the film and television industries. “La La Land,” which was a Hamptons International Film Festival selection, swept all categories in which it was nominated, including best musical.

This year’s host, Jimmy Fallon, has a place in Sagaponack and is known for frequent sightings around the South Fork. His show opening included references to several nominees as well as a dance routine with Justin Timberlake.

For the HBO series “Divorce,” Amagansett’s Sarah Jessica Parker was nominated for best actress in a comedy or musical television series, but lost to Tracee Ellis Ross for “Blackish.”

Liev Schreiber, who has a house in Montauk, was nominated for his title performance in the Showtime series “Ray Donovan,” but lost to Billy Bob Thornton for “Goliath.”

“La La Land” won awards in the musical and comedy section for best actor for Ryan Gosling, best actress for Emma Stone (Annette Bening was also nominated for “20th Century Women”), best director and screenplay for Damien Chazelle (“Moonlight” and "Manchester by the Sea” were also nominated in both categories), original score, and best original song for “City of Stars.” 

In addition to “La La Land,” HIFF selections for 2016 were well represented. In the best drama category, “Moonlight,” one of three HIFF films nominated, won. “Lion” and “Manchester by the Sea” were the other festival nominees in that category. 

Casey Affleck won for best actor in a drama for his performance in “Manchester by the Sea.” Joel Edgerton was nominated for “Loving” in that category. Ruth Negga, who co-starred in “Loving,” was nominated for best actress in a drama, but lost to Isabelle Huppert for “Elle.”

Mahershala Ali was nominated for best supporting actor for “Moonlight” and Dev Patel for “Lion,” but Aaron Taylor-Johnson was the winner for “Nocturnal Animals.”

There were also many HIFF films with nominations for best supporting actress in a drama, including nods to Naomie Harris for “Moonlight,” Nicole Kidman for “Lion,” and Michelle Williams for “Manchester by the Sea.” Viola Davis won for “Fences,” however.

HIFF selections also garnered three nominations for best foreign film: “Divines,” “The Salesman,” and “Toni Erdmann.” “Elle,” a film from France, was the winner.
