Four Bonackers Hit the Long Island Elite Meet

March 23, 2019

Ryan Fowkes, East Hampton High’s senior distance runner, continued lowering his times at St. Anthony’s Long Island Elite Meet in South Huntington Saturday, winning the 1,600 in 4 minutes and 25.49 seconds, thus eclipsing Erik Engstrom’s former school record of 4:26.80, set in 2016. Engstrom is running at the University of Massachusetts now. Fowkes is headed for George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Ben Turnbull, East Hampton’s coach, also took Matt Maya to the elite meet. Maya, he said, finished 13th in the 300, in a creditable time of 38 seconds.

Engstrom’s younger sister, Ava, placed eighth in the meet’s 1,500-meter girls race, in 5:01.75. Her teammate, Penelope Greene, a Pierson student, placed third in the freshman-sophomore 1,500, in 5:15.57.
