Aim Was True

Matthew Griffiths, 23, of East Hampton, according to his father, Steve, finished in the top 10 of three of the national 12-gauge shotgun tournament’s five events recently in San Antonio.

“He was 10th in the all-around competition, which included pros,” Steve Griffiths said, “which is pretty darn good. There were more than 1,600 shooters there, and more than 600 in the master class, which is his class. He took second place in that class’s Krieghoff Kup, he was 10th among 452 contestants in the Five Stand master class, and finished eighth in the SuperSport event.”

Plattsburgh, Ho

The East Hampton High School girls cross-country team won’t be the only one representing the East End in the coming weekend’s state meet in Plattsburgh: The Shelter Island boys, headed by Kal Lewis, who’s aiming for a state three-peat, and the Pierson girls, headed by Penelope Greene, winner of the state qualifier’s C-D race in 20 minutes and 30 seconds this past weekend, are going too, as is Ben McErlean of Pierson’s boys team.

Dock Race Winners

Two Montauk visitors, Paul Sweeney of New York City and Molly Paterno of Los Angeles, topped a field of 225 in Sunday’s Dock Race, which spanned the Montauk Post Office and George Watson’s Dock bar and restaurant.

Sweeney covered the hilly 3-plus-mile course in 19 minutes and 48 seconds. Paterno, the top female, was 10th over all, in 21:58. Miles Eckardt, 9, was the boys winner in 27:49, and Shilo, 12, was the girls winner in 35:18.

Dan Clark, whom Paterno and the third-place finisher, Scotty Crowe, also of Los Angeles, were visiting, finished seventh, “with the top two dogs, Jack and Lola.”
