East Hampton High’s boys soccer team, the League VI champion, has been seeded second in Suffolk County’s Class AA tournament, behind Smithtown West, and is to play seventh-seeded West Islip here in a first-round match today at 2 p.m.
The boys capped the regular season at 11-2-1 here on Oct. 16 by taking Westhampton Beach to school on the way to a 7-0 shutout.
Eleven East Hampton players contributed to the scoring, namely Brian Tacuri, Ariel Garcia, Gary Gutama, John Bustamante, Chris Guallpa, Jake Espana, and David Flores, the goal-scorers, with Jonathon Armijos, Bustamante, Alex Farez, Gutama, Nolan Serrano, and Randy Japa getting assists. Don McGovern, East Hampton’s coach, began going to the bench in the 16th minute with the Bonackers up 3-0.
“It was a great team effort,” the coach said later, adding that “we’ll need to continue with this great team effort as we go into the playoff season.”
The winner of today’s game is to play the Huntington-Comsewogue winner at the higher-seeded school on Monday. Huntington is the third seed; Comsewogue, which defeated East Hampton twice in the regular season, is seeded sixth. The AA final is to be played next Thursday at Patchogue-Medford High School at 3 p.m.
Field Hockey, Volleyball
East Hampton’s field hockey team, seeded fifth among the nine Class B schools, was to have played at fourth-seeded Rocky Point Tuesday, with the winner to face either Bayport-Blue Point or Sayville on Saturday at 10 a.m. Bayport-Blue Point is the tournament’s top seed.
The boys volleyball team, whose regular season record of 7-7 enabled it to get into the Division II (small schools) playoffs as the fifth seed, was to have played at fourth-seeded East Islip yesterday, with the winner to play at top-seeded Eastport-South Manor on Saturday at 4.
The 6-8 girls volleyball team, which lost its last four regular-season games, did not make the playoffs.
Girls Tennis
Last Thursday, Bayport-Blue Point, the defending small schools girls tennis champion, edged the Ross School 4-3, as it had earlier in the season. Ross, which is led by two eighth graders, Lola Dangin and Olivia Caruso, had the day before defeated Shoreham-Wading River in a first-round match played on East Hampton High’s courts.
Shoreham’s coach, according to Marcelo Reda, Ross’s coach, played three singles players at doubles — high school matches comprise three singles and four doubles matches these days rather than what had been the customary four singles and three doubles — but the North Shore school still came up on the short end of a 4-3 score.
The 12th-seeded East Hampton’s girls tennis team, minus two of its top players, Maya Molin and Audrey Monaco, was upset by the county tourney’s last seed, Riverhead, 4-3 in a first-round match played here on Oct. 16.
Cross-Country, Swimming
East Hampton’s boys and girls cross-country teams were to have run in division meets at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on Tuesday, and are to contend in the county meet there on Friday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m.
And, finally, East Hampton’s girls swimming team finished the regular season at 3-1 as the result of a 51-45 win at Lindenhurst on Oct. 18. East Hampton finished on top in the 200-yard medley relay (Lucy Knight, Izzy Caplin, Valeria Gutierrez, and Lizzy Daniels), the 200 freestyle (Cybelle Curry), the 200 individual medley (Mia Luna), the 100 butterfly (Daniels), 500 free (Lily Early), the 200 free relay (Ava Castillo, Curry, Lily Griffin, and Ashley Leon), the 100 backstroke (Caplin), and in the 100 breaststroke (Castillo).
The league meet will be tomorrow at West Islip High School at 4:30 p.m. The county meet will be contested at Stony Brook University on Nov. 4.
