Two school relay records were set over the weekend by runners on Yani Cuesta’s East Hampton High School girls winter track team.

The sprint medley team of Meredith Spolarich (400 meters), Melina Sarlo (200), Leslie Samuel (200), and Ryleigh O’Donnell (800) won that event at the Zeitler Relays on Saturday in a school-record time of 4 minutes and 31.09 seconds. And on Sunday, at the 168th Street Armory in New York City, that same quartet ran a school-record 4:13.74 in finishing fourth in the Stanner Games’ 4-by-400 race, “shattering the record they’d set earlier in the season,” according to Cuesta.

“The energy and commotion at the Armory was exhilarating,” Cuesta said in an emailed report. “The girls all ran personal-best splits. It was such an exciting race to watch. I was out of my seat yelling for them to stay relaxed and encouraging them to keep moving. [Eric] Malecki was so excited he started to lose his voice. . . .”

Cuesta added that her four charges may well have qualified for the Nike Indoor Nationals, which are to be held from March 10 through 12 at the Armory.
