East Hampton High’s Bronco Campsey at 108 pounds and Franco Palombino at 215 won League III wrestling championships Saturday — Campsey’s four pins in a total of 3 minutes and 27 seconds being the day’s best in that category. Ethan Mitchell’s crew, which finished third among the seven schools in contention, also had three finalists — Juan Roque at 116, Adam Beckwith at 190, and Juan Espinoza at 285 — as well as three fourth-place finishers in Josue Elias at 124, Justin Prince at 160, and Aman Chugh at 215.

The Division 1 Suffolk County championship meet is to be held Saturday and Sunday at Stony Brook University.

Swimmers

East Hampton’s county swimming meet qualifiers placed eighth among the 19 squads that vied in the Suffolk County meet at Stony Brook University Saturday. Liam Knight, who is to swim in the state meet at Ithaca over the March 7 and 8 weekend, accounted for 46 of the team’s 69 points, finishing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle, eighth in the 100 free. Along with Cristian Sigua, Ben Kriegsman, and Nicky Chavez, he finished fifth in the 400 freestyle relay, and with Jasper Samuelson, Dylan Knapik, and Zeb Ryan, eighth in the 200 free relay.

In other events, Kriegsman, Chavez, Ryan, and Knapik placed seventh in the 200 medley relay; Chavez placed eighth in the 200 individual medley and ninth in the 100 backstroke, and Knapik tied for 15th in the 50 free.

“The boys rose to the high standards former East Hampton teams have established, showing all the skills and characteristics they have been developing over the course of the season,” Craig Brierley, Bonac’s head coach, said in an emailed report. “Ben Kriegsman, a Pierson sophomore, dropped the largest combined time in his events, subtracting 11.2 seconds from his three races.”

“His fellow Pierson sophomore, Nick Chavez, continued his barrage on his times, turning in best times in two of his three races and contributing 43 individual/relay points to the team. Zeb Ryan, an East Hampton junior, and Dylan Knapik, a Pierson junior, had best times in all three of their events, and Jasper Samuelson, an East Hampton freshman, swam a best in his leg of the 200 free relay.”

Hoopsters

East Hampton’s boys basketball team, while it ended the League V season at 5-11 and 7-13 over all, looked like a playoff team in its final home game here with Rocky Point on Feb. 4. The Eagles had bested the Bonackers by 25 at Rocky Point on Jan. 10. This time, East Hampton won 64-52.

Three baskets by Mason Jefferson and two by Toby Foster, his second one being a 3-pointer, fueled an 11-5 run at the end of the second quarter that sent East Hampton into the third up 31-26. With contributions from Foster, Jefferson, Miles Menu, and Carter Dickinson, the sole senior starter, the Bonackers built on that lead thereafter, winning by 12. Foster finished with a game-high 29 points, Jefferson had 14, and Chris Kelley 8.
