Peconic Jitney Is on Hold

Wed, 03/11/2020 - 23:15

A proposal to relaunch the Peconic Jitney, a ferry service that provided a direct link between Sag Harbor and Greenport during its trial run in 2012, has been scrapped for this year, Jim Ryan, a manager at the company, told Sag Harbor Village Mayor Kathleen Mulcahy last week.

In a letter to Ms. Mulcahy and village board members, Mr. Ryan said Peconic Jitney, a subsidiary of Hampton Jitney, had been unable to find a vessel “that would adequately reflect the charm and character of our East End communities.”

The company’s goal now, said Mr. Ryan, is to build its own 49-passenger boat to launch next summer. He said he would work with Sag Harbor and Greenport officials to come up with an acceptable design.

Mr. Ryan asked the board to consider providing the service with a long-term landing agreement for the use of the north end of Long Wharf, but added that he would discuss alternative landing sites with Robert Bori, the village’s harbormaster.

During a presentation to the village board on Jan. 11, Mr. Ryan had said the ferry would operate from May 1 to Oct. 31. He will present a proposal for ferry service next year at the board’s work session on April 22, he said.     J.B.
