Start the New Year With a Hike

In the winter, seals can often be found on the rocks off the north side of Montauk

Want to start the New Year in the great outdoors? In Montauk there are two chances to do that on New Year's Day.

Montauk Point State Park staff will lead a First Day Hike from 11 a.m. to noon. The group will head to the seal haul-out viewing area, and while there is no guarantee seals will cooperate, binoculars are recommended, along with bottled water. Hikers have been advised to wear clothing and footwear appropriate for a two-mile winter hike. Strollers are not encouraged because of changes in elevation on dirt and sandy paths. Those interested have been asked to meet at the lower parking lot picnic area. No registration is required.

The cost is $4 per person, with children under 3 free. Reservations are required. Those seeking more information have been asked to call 631-668-5000 or visit parks.ny.gov.

The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society will host another New Year’s Day hike, this one of the trails of Hither Woods, at 10 a.m. The 7.5-mile outing will take participants past Split Rock, the Devil’s Cradle, Ram Level, the Lost Boulder, and the spectacular coastline that is the northern boundary of Hither Woods. The gathering spot is the Hither Hills west overlook on the north side of Montauk Highway. Lunch and liquids are recommended. Rick Whalen has more information by calling or texting 631-275-8539 or emailing [email protected].

Time to Strip, Dip, Freeze

Polar plunges at Main Beach in East Hampton and Beach Lane in Wainscott on New Year’s Day accomplish many things: bracing and exhilarating starts to the year, the company of many hundreds of friends and fellow townspeople, and a chance to secure bragging rights that extend well into 2026. But most important, each serves as a critical fund-raiser for food pantries.

Support Where It’s Most Needed

Soon after moving to Water Mill with her family in 2015, Marit Molin became aware of a largely unacknowledged population underpinning the complicated Hamptons economy. That led her to create Hamptons Community Outreach, which is dedicated to meeting basic critical needs to help break cycles of poverty.

Item of the Week: From Mary Nimmo Moran, Christmas 1898

This etching by Mary Nimmo Moran shows what was likely the view from her home across Town Pond, with the Gardiner Mill in the background, a favorite landscape for her.
