Saturday Is AVIS Day

Thu, 07/14/2022 - 10:56

Saturday is Celebrate AVIS Day, honoring the Amagansett Village Improvement Society, which was founded in 1921 and is marking its 100th anniversary one year late because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hugh King, the East Hampton Town historian, will deliver “Amagansett’s Past Remembered,” a talk with accompanying historical photographs of the hamlet, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Amagansett Library’s community room. Winning entries from the society’s recent photo contest will be on display.

Those interested in attending have been asked to register in advance at bit.ly/3ao8xuS.

Saturday’s commemoration will follow the East Hampton Town Board’s memorializing resolution in support of the celebration, which was passed on Tuesday. The society “first met in 1921 with the objective of improving the hamlet of Amagansett for the ‘advancement of the welfare and the best interest’ of the village residents,” the resolution states. The town board, Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc said, “does hereby declare July 16th ‘A.V.I.S. Day’ in recognition of the continuous efforts of the Amagansett Village Improvement Society.”
