Long Island’s Car Free Day is next Thursday. Now in its eighth year, the international event is observed in September, with people encouraged to get around without cars, instead traveling by train, bus, bicycle, subway, on foot, or by car-pooling. The goal is to reduce the number of vehicles on roads, thus reducing traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. It was observed in more than 3,100 cities in 50 countries last year.

Those who pledge to go car free next Thursday, at carfreedayli.com/pledge, will be eligible for prizes. Those already using alternative modes of transportation or who are working remotely can also take the pledge and be eligible for prizes. Pledges made through Friday, Sept. 23, at 11:59 p.m. will be entered into a raffle drawing. Those living or working in Suffolk or Nassau Counties are eligible.

Prizes include a Long Island Rail Road 10-trip all-access ticket; bicycle and skateboard gift cards, safety gear, and apparel; a bike-share annual membership, and a horseback trail ride.

Birds Here Are in Trouble

Birds are in trouble everywhere, but it turns out our birds here on the East End are in even worse shape than most. On our beaches, shorebirds have lost 33 percent of their population since 1970, and in our trees, songbirds continue to experience significant population declines, losing 27 percent in the same period, according to the 2025 State of the Birds report from the North American Bird Conservation Initiative.

For the first Am O'Gansett Parade in 2009, the organizers jokingly promised Clydesdales, Macy's balloons, and floats. With good humor and an enthusiastic response from the community, the very short parade has been an annual event ever since.
