With Sign Down, Canio’s Books Faces Next Chapter

The sign came down Monday at the venerable Canio’s Books in Sag Harbor, but its owners plan to continue events elsewhere as they look for a new location.

While the overstuffed bookstore is no longer, whatever comes next at 290 Main Street in Sag Harbor, locals will always know it as Canio’s.

The sign was removed Monday afternoon.

Kathryn Szoka, a co-owner of Canio’s Books with Maryann Calendrille, said they had “more books than we can sell in 10 years” in storage in anticipation of their finding a new storefront. In the meantime, those books can be purchased at bookshop.org.

And the Canio’s programming continues. The Moby-Dick Marathon will be held in June, and a GoFundMe page dedicated to helping the shop transition is now live.
