‘Laid Down’ His Motorcycle

A motorcyclist escaped serious injury Sunday morning after a 91-year-old driver failed to yield the right of way at an Amagansett intersection.

Gregg L. Rickards, 69, of Amagansett was eastbound on Montauk Highway on a 2003 Honda motorcycle when Judith M. Banki of Manhattan came out of Bluff Road in her 2004 Lexus. In an attempt to avoid a collision, Mr. Rickards “laid down” his motorcycle, which continued to slide east and collided with the Lexus, East Hampton Town police said.

Ms. Banki told police she was trying to make a left-hand turn from Bluff Road onto Montauk Highway, and had checked for oncoming traffic and did not see any vehicle approaching. She thought the motorcyclist’s speed contributed to the accident.

Mr. Rickards had abrasions on his lower arm, but was not taken to the hospital, the report said, which noted he had been wearing a helmet.

Ms. Banki, who was not injured, was given two traffic violations, including one for failure to yield. Both the Lexus and the motorcycle had to be towed.
