Swerved to Spare a Deer

Thu, 10/03/2019 - 13:01

An 18-year-old hit a utility pole and a sign after she swerved to avoid hitting a deer on Route 114 in East Hampton early on Friday morning.

Gabrielle C. Morris of Sag Harbor was driving a 2006 Chrysler sedan southbound at about 5:20 a.m. when a deer ran out into the road just north of Hardscrabble Court, she told East Hampton Town police. The car sideswiped a pole, then hit a road sign before coming to rest in a wooded area just off the road. At least one airbag deployed, according to police.

Ms. Morris, who had been wearing her seatbelt, complained of neck pain. The East Hampton Village Ambulance Association took her to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. No one else was in the car.

The Chrysler, owned by Christine O’Neal of Sag Harbor, sustained major damage to its front and side. The deer was apparently unhurt.
