Dell Cullum (I, C, F)

Thu, 10/31/2019 - 17:06

Dell Cullum announced last month that he is not running for re-election. He will appear, however, on the Conservative, Independence, and Fusion Party lines on the Nov. 5 ballot, but he left unclear whether he would serve if re-elected.

Mr. Cullum was elected in 2017 on the Democratic Party line, earning the fourth highest number of votes among 18 candidates despite not campaigning for the position, but was not chosen by the party to be on its slate this year. An advocate for wildlife and a crusader against litter, he told The Star last month that his campaign for trustee was an effort to compel East Hampton Village and the town to remove trash receptacles from the beaches, arguing that cans on the beaches, as opposed to the road ends or parking lots, inevitably result in debris strewn across wide areas of the beach and in the water.

The East Hampton Village Board implemented a pilot program this season at Georgica Beach, in which trash receptacles were removed from the beach and placed at the road end. The program was expanded to Wiborg’s Beach midway through the season. “I think trash cans are pretty much on their last day on the beach, after this season,” Mr. Cullum said last month. “So there’s no need for me to be involved in this headache called politics, because it’s just not my game.”
