John Marshall and Amagansett Schools Honored

The John M. Marshall Elementary School in East Hampton and the Amagansett School are the only two South Fork schools to make the New York State Education Department’s list of 562 “high achieving and high progress” schools throughout the state, the department announced last week.

Being named a Recognition School acknowledges growth and achievement in English language arts and mathematics, absenteeism rates, graduation rates, “college, career, and civic readiness,” and a participation rate of 95 percent or greater in the state tests in English and math for students in grades three through eight.

“The teachers and administrators at these Recognition Schools have taken to heart the critical mission of educating the whole child,” said Betty Rosa, the chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents, which oversees public schools in the state.

In an email, Seth Turner, the superintendent of the Amagansett School, commended the teachers, administrators, staff, parents, and school board “for their commitment to the school.”

“Most importantly, I recognize the students for their diligent work, which led to this achievement for the school,” he said. “Great things are happening in Amagansett!”

Richard Burns, the superintendent of the East Hampton School District, said he is grateful for the recognition.

“This honor is the result of the leadership skills of principal Beth Doyle, assistant principal Russell Morgan, and the dedicated faculty and staff,” Mr. Burns said. “The culture in place at the elementary school is one of providing the best educational opportunities for all of the students. To be recognized for our accomplishment of educational excellence in student performance is a worthy one indeed.”
