The Bliss Sleep Center on the corner of Montauk Highway and Hayground Road in Water Mill is opening a Bliss Baby Store next door. The company is extending its nontoxic line of organic mattresses, bedding, and sustainable wood furniture to include mattresses and bedding for infants, as well as sustainable wood cribs and toys.

The Bliss Sleep Center carries items handmade in the United States and handpicked for their purity, a release said. Its products aim to reduce indoor pollution and offer healthy alternatives to the use of chemicals that aggravate asthma or nervous-system disorders.

Tiina the Store: Quality and Timeless Appeal

“Fashion is fickle, and it ages very fast. I like things that are more permanent.”

In a town where it sometimes seems that every new store is a one-summer pop-up, Tiina Laakkonen, owner of Tiina the Store in Amagansett, is not interested in “fast food or fast fashion.” She just wants to sell clothes. Not fashion, just clothes.

“Fashion is fickle,” she said recently, “and it ages very fast. I like things that are more permanent.” She chooses her merchandise for its quality and timeless appeal. Many garments are handmade, including pricey cashmere sweaters from the luxury brand The Elder Statesman, and hand-knit rugs.

Ms. Laakkonen believes that high-quality clothing “becomes more beautiful the more you wear it, the more you use it.” She herself owns and wears dresses for 15 or more years, and wants her customers to “buy and wear the things they can use for the rest of their lives.”

Ms. Laakkonen believes not only in permanent clothing but also in permanent locale. Staying open year round has helped her build a loyal customer base, she said. “I feel like once our customers discover us and once they start shopping here, I feel like I owe it to them to be open and be here.” She does not respect pop-up stores, which she called “opportunistic.”

Unlike many of the pop-ups, Tiina the Store has no branch in New York City. Its fans can, however, shop online at tiinathestore.com.

Ms. Laakkonen started out as a model and fashion-design student in Paris, went on to work for Chanel and Lanvin, and then was hired as a stylist at British Vogue. Continuing to work as a magazine and celebrity stylist, she has many connections to the world of high fashion, which allows her to bring designers and their clothing to Amagansett. Every summer she features a different designer. This summer’s special guest is Christina Kim, founder and designer of the Dosa line, whom she has known for about 20 years. At a small cocktail reception at the store on Saturday, customers and fans of Ms. Kim got the chance to meet her and shop her newest collection.

Ms. Laakkonen said this was “a way of introducing designers on a more deep and individual level to our customers . . . I think it’s really nice to see the person and to meet the person behind the things you enjoy.”

Tiina the Store’s aesthetic is heavily influenced by the owner’s Finnish roots and experiences in Paris and London. While most of the store is devoted to clothing, furniture and decorative items that mirror the interior design of Ms. Laakkonen’s Amagansett house are also present. The palette, neutrals and deep blues, seems instantly applicable to anyone’s “Hamptons” style. “The store has always been a dream of mine,” said Ms. Laakkonen, “and the things in it are all things that I love.”

Many of the clothes she sells are unisex. “I like wearing men’s clothes, and women love to buy men’s shirts and sweaters,” she said. “I think it’s very old-fashioned, thinking that things are either gender-specific or season-specific. I just think it’s nice to offer things that are up to anyone’s interpretation.”

Jillian Rennar wears a rather large gold anchor around her neck, symbolic of her new business at 721 Main Street in Montauk called Candied Anchor, a candy store that is so much more.

Two huge crystal chandeliers light up the small space, which at just 220 square feet is filled to capacity with nostalgic-type candies, such as Smarties, Red Hots, Mary Janes, and Fruit Stripe gum, plus gourmet candies, fresh popcorn, frozen sorbets, drinks, and party decorations and treats.

Born and raised in Montauk, Ms. Rennar, 23, is known for her photography, which decorates a small portion of the store and sells at arts and crafts fairs in the area. She knew she wanted to open a business in the hamlet, and after careful research she hit upon the candy store.

“I wanted to start something fun, something fresh,” she said on Monday while a group of youngsters huddled outside, perhaps searching their pockets for coins. The candy sells by the piece or the pound, and customers are welcome to help themselves at the self-serve candy bar.

“It’s a unique variety of candy that you can’t find elsewhere,” she said, adding that she offers chocolate-covered bacon and beef jerky. “People get intrigued by it. If you like the combination of chocolate and salt, you’ll like it,” she said in response to a visitor’s grimace.

Against the advice of her parents and friends, she opened on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, one of Montauk’s busiest and most boisterous weekends. “It was nice,” she said, and less hectic than she had thought it might be.

What she’s aiming for is a 1950s sweet shop with a modern sensibility, Ms. Rennar said. She plans to be very selective with her inventory and samples before she puts anything on the shelves.

Hand-pulled taffy, goat’s milk caramels, vegan marshmallows, truffles, gluten-free candy, balloons, pinatas, custom-made party garlands, and candles are offered as well.

She also sells products from Dawn’s Delicious Delights, her mother’s line that includes cookies, cakes, and pies in a jar. From her home in Montauk, Dawn Rennar whips up brownies, scones, and muffins and specializes in weddings and shower treats.

More about Jillian Rennar’s products can be found online at candiedanchor. com. At present, the shop is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and she plans to extend the hours in summer.

The emphasis is clearly on beauty

The new White’s in some ways looks older than the old White’s, which is a good thing. When the new owners, Nyco Chemists, purchased White’s Pharmacy, which had been a mainstay of East Hampton’s Main Street since 1873, they did what every new homeowner in the Hamptons seems to do: Gutted the place. The result is a fine-looking store combining old details such as a stamped tin ceiling and an antique-y logo mosaic on the front entrance. The new owners, who added the drugstore to their portfolio of two others in August, also gave it a vintage name by rechristening it White’s Apothecary.

Though the store still has a pharmacist and provides everyday drug store necessities, the emphasis is clearly on beauty. The new space has a different layout with much more room to display its myriad prettily packaged cosmetics. And while it might seem as if it added quite a few new brands, it only added four, according to Diana Ross, the executive store director.

The new brands, which were requested by customers, are Smashbox (trendy cosmetics), Santa Maria Novella (cleansing milk), Nuxe (shimmery bronze body oil), and Fresh (cannabis eau de cologne). For the man who thought he had everything, there are now items from the Art of Shaving (badger hair shaving brush) and Jack Black (oil-free sunblock).

“We didn’t change much inside,” said Ms. Ross, who did her homework last summer and fall, querying customers about their preferences. Mostly they moved around display cases to make things more inviting. They also added a lot of gifts — from candles to cosmetic bags — the better for houseguests in need of hostess presents.

Ms. Ross, a former beauty blogger, brings more than 40 years of beauty experience to the store — though you’d never guess her age looking at her skin. “I’m a beauty junkie,” she said. Does she have a favorite brand? Not on your life. “I use different products all the time. I love to test them.”

Part spa, the new store offers services such as facials, makeup application, hair consultations, and brow tinting and shaping, done on Thursdays by Megan Born, a licensed esthetician. Ms. Ross is also interested in wellness and will be stocking nutritional supplements and homeopathic remedies, in her belief that beauty is more than skin deep.

While the pharmacy remained open throughout and the full space has been open for some weeks, the store will hold a grand reopening tomorrow from noon to 6 p.m. to officially unveil the new space. Executives from cosmetic companies including Nest Fragrances, Shiseido, Caudalie, Bumble and Bumble, Jack Black, and Estée Lauder will be on hand to offer samples, advice, and celebrate the new old store.
