The emphasis is clearly on beauty

The new White’s in some ways looks older than the old White’s, which is a good thing. When the new owners, Nyco Chemists, purchased White’s Pharmacy, which had been a mainstay of East Hampton’s Main Street since 1873, they did what every new homeowner in the Hamptons seems to do: Gutted the place. The result is a fine-looking store combining old details such as a stamped tin ceiling and an antique-y logo mosaic on the front entrance. The new owners, who added the drugstore to their portfolio of two others in August, also gave it a vintage name by rechristening it White’s Apothecary.

Though the store still has a pharmacist and provides everyday drug store necessities, the emphasis is clearly on beauty. The new space has a different layout with much more room to display its myriad prettily packaged cosmetics. And while it might seem as if it added quite a few new brands, it only added four, according to Diana Ross, the executive store director.

The new brands, which were requested by customers, are Smashbox (trendy cosmetics), Santa Maria Novella (cleansing milk), Nuxe (shimmery bronze body oil), and Fresh (cannabis eau de cologne). For the man who thought he had everything, there are now items from the Art of Shaving (badger hair shaving brush) and Jack Black (oil-free sunblock).

“We didn’t change much inside,” said Ms. Ross, who did her homework last summer and fall, querying customers about their preferences. Mostly they moved around display cases to make things more inviting. They also added a lot of gifts — from candles to cosmetic bags — the better for houseguests in need of hostess presents.

Ms. Ross, a former beauty blogger, brings more than 40 years of beauty experience to the store — though you’d never guess her age looking at her skin. “I’m a beauty junkie,” she said. Does she have a favorite brand? Not on your life. “I use different products all the time. I love to test them.”

Part spa, the new store offers services such as facials, makeup application, hair consultations, and brow tinting and shaping, done on Thursdays by Megan Born, a licensed esthetician. Ms. Ross is also interested in wellness and will be stocking nutritional supplements and homeopathic remedies, in her belief that beauty is more than skin deep.

While the pharmacy remained open throughout and the full space has been open for some weeks, the store will hold a grand reopening tomorrow from noon to 6 p.m. to officially unveil the new space. Executives from cosmetic companies including Nest Fragrances, Shiseido, Caudalie, Bumble and Bumble, Jack Black, and Estée Lauder will be on hand to offer samples, advice, and celebrate the new old store.

“Our specialty is making ancient wisdom easily accessible,”

Monte Farber and Amy Zerner, a Springs couple known for their success in interpreting such branches of the occult as tarot and astrology for a mass audience, opened their new shop last weekend in the Village of East Hampton, next to Rowdy Hall in the Parrish Mews off Main Street. At the Enchanted World Emporium, starting tomorrow from 1 to 8 p.m., the author and artist will make available locally all the things they have sold far and wide for many years.

Their first customer wandered in early this month, just as Mr. Farber packed up his tool bag, havingfinished hanging a framed angel tapestry that hovers above the store’s desk. She left shortly thereafter with a Chakra Meditation Kit, a trove of book, cards, and CD to “bring balance to body, mind, and spirit.”

Though the shop had not officially opened, within minutes Bridget LeRoy, an old friend of the couple, stopped in to wish them well and check out the merchandise. “We need a place like this,” said Ms. LeRoy, “ever since Metaphysical Books and Tools closed.” Ms. Leroy was referring to a shop in Sag Harbor owned by Lindsey Kane that sold such items as candles and incense until it closed in 2010.

“I just spoke to Lindsey,” said Ms. Zerner. “She gave me the thumbs-up.”

The duo began collaborating on books in 1988 with the publication of “Karma Cards.” “We came out of the ’60s,” said Ms. Zerner. But they felt that the books available at the time about mystical topics were “archaic.”

“Our specialty is making ancient wisdom easily accessible,” she said. The couple have been given their own shelf at Barnes and Noble.

While selling their books — 45 at last count — to the multitudes, Ms. Zerner, an artist, has carved a niche designing fashion and jewelry (think horoscope necklaces) for an elite following at Bergdorf Goodman, where a cache of “feminist philanthropists” pays top dollar for her hand-appliqued jackets. Made of silk with embroidered organza and beaded trims, the theatrical apparel are considered works of art by many and have been collected by such high-profile women as Liz Taylor, who had nine, Patti LaBelle, and Vivien Duffield, an heir to Selfridges, the London department store, who owns 30.

Ms. Zerner’s first products for the department store were a series of tapestries of goddesses and mythological themes. She was soon commissioned to turn the Enchanted Tarot, a deck of cards, into 78 tapestries on such subjects as romance and victory.

While most of the stock at Metaphysical was at a lowish price point, the Enchanted World offers a selection of luxury items. Though the shop’s books start at $5.95, tapestries sell for up to $10,000. A serpent ring designed by Ms. Zerner and worn by Rihanna sells for $220 and her one-of-a-kind jackets and caftans go for between $1,800 and $5,000.

Mr. Farber, will be giving personal astrology readings by appointment at $250 per half-hour, answering questions clients might have from “Where should I live?” to business queries such as “Who to hire” or “Who to fire.” “Monte is not really fortune-telling,” said Ms. Zerner, “but he can help you make your fortune.” Shirley MacLaine is a client.

The couple plans to spend a lot of time in the shop. “At Bergdorf’s I would sometimes be there to tell customers how I make [the designs]. It makes a difference to meet the artist and make a connection.”

As the pair fussed over jewelry and book displays, a neighboring shopkeeper appeared. After looking around, she said, “It’s nice to have something spiritual in the middle of all this materialism.”

The couple will be holding a book signing Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. for their newest title, “Sun Sign Secrets.”

Beth Lee Schlendorf was struck by the idea that she and her family were spending a third of their lives sleeping on a possibly toxic soup
By
Debra Scott

When Beth Lee Schlendorf purchased a memory foam mattress a couple of years ago, she had no idea that it would spark an idea to start a business. The synthetic slab, which she later discovered comprised more than 60 chemicals, was so smelly that she was warned by the store she purchased it from to air it out for between 24 and 48 hours. When she began to get headaches she was struck by the idea that she and her family were spending a third of their lives sleeping on a possibly toxic soup. It was a wake-up call that put her on a mission to find out what mattresses are made of.

“I spent a year researching,” she said, explaining that the business is not an easy one to wade through. Many so-called “natural” or even “organic” mattresses contained some natural materials, but were still primarily petroleum-based, she discovered. Then the proverbial lightbulb went off. If she was having so much trouble making sense of the industry, others must be too. She decided to open a store where, having done the legwork, she would offer customers her expertise. She opened Bliss Sleep Center, at the corner of Hayground Road and Montauk Highway in Water Mill, last spring.

Having worked as a banker — she was a vice president at Citibank — her new career wasn’t an obvious choice. Though she had always thought she might one day open a store, she figured it would be a clothing boutique. “But when I learned all about this stuff, it became a passion.” Her husband, Micah Schlendorf, president of the Southampton Chamber of Commerce and a vice president of Suffolk County National Bank in East Hampton, helps with marketing. The couple live in Eastport.

Not trusting industry hype, she visited factories to see for herself how manufacturers complied with organic standards. She finally chose four companies whose wares she sells. “All are the purest on the market at the most reasonable prices,” said Ms. Schlendorf. Most are made with a core of natural latex, which “cradles your spine and is good for support,” and cotton and wool. Latex, she said, “was in our great, great, great-grandfathers’ beds.” Besides being soft, cotton and wool offer natural flame-retardant features and are dust, mold, and mildew resistant.

“Flame-retardant chemicals can spark nervous system disorders and can cause cancer,” according to Bobbi Chase Wilding, deputy director of Clean and Healthy New York, a nonprofit that promotes policy and market changes related to safer chemicals.

Queen mattress prices at Bliss range from $700 to $3,700, and all are handmade to order. Bliss also carries seven toppers made of wool, cotton, or natural latex ($400 to $1,600).

On a recent visit to the store, Annie Veltri of Amagansett was testing different mattresses and toppers. Ms. Veltri, who suffers from allergies and felt she needed a natural bed “to breathe easier,” was impressed by the fact that Ms. Schlendorf had asked them a series of questions to guide them through the complicated decision-making process. Questions such as: Do you sleep hot? Do you have back issues or aches? Do you toss and turn?

Both husband and wife had different sleep issues so Ms. Schlendorf demonstrated how each side of the bed could be customized. “Everything in the store can be customized,” said Ms. Schlendorf, mentioning pullout couch mattresses and dog beds as two examples. Ditto for pillows, of which the store carries nine kinds. As she showed the couple pillow filler options including buckwheat, she let them handle a soft cotton-like substance called kapok, from a seedpod from the rain forest, which is another filling.

The store, which also carries organic duvets, sustainable wood bed frames, cribs, furniture, and products from Sag Harbor’s Pure and Peaceful, which makes essential oil-derived items from linen spray to tick repellants, has been doing very well. There was a spike in business after HBO aired “Toxic Hot Seat,” a documentary about the perils of flame-retardants. Business is going so well, in fact, that Ms. Schlendorf is planning to open another store farther west.

As for that memory foam mattress? “We threw it out, along with three other mattresses we’d just bought.” What do they sleep on now? “A bed from Savvy Rest. It’s changed my husband’s life,” she said. “He used to get headaches three times a week. He thought it was work, but after three months on the mattress he said,  ‘Wow, I haven’t head a headache in three months.’ And he stopped tossing and turning.” What about snoring? “Well, he doesn’t snore as much. I’d say it’s eliminated his snoring by 70 percent.”
