Rodents' Nest to Blame for Sagaponack Fire

By
Taylor K. Vecsey

A rodent's nest behind the walls of a Sagaponack house caused a small fire on Sunday morning. The Bridgehampton Fire Department was called to 794 Sagg Main Street just before 7 a.m., and chiefs discovered smoke coming from the house.

Jeff White, the first assistant chief, called for the rapid intervention team from the Sag Harbor Fire Department, which would help to rescue firefighters battling a blaze from inside a house, and an engine from the East Hampton Fire Department. The Southampton Town fire marshal's office was called to investigate, but firefighters discovered an electrical fire had started in the ceiling of a second floor bathroom, likely caused by rodents, officials said.

Firefighters were on scene for about two hours. Meanwhile, the Southampton Fire Department brought an engine to Bridgehampton's headquarters in case any other alarms sounded.
