Shinnecock at Watermill Center

Star Staff

The next iteration of Saturdays @ WMC, the Watermill Center’s free programs of activities for families, will take place Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. and feature a tour of the building, grounds, and collection, and a workshop conducted by Shane Weeks and the Shinnecock Nation.

The tour of the center will take place from 1 to 2:30 and will include exploration of the eight-acre property’s landscaping, outdoor sculpture, and rooftop gardens as well as an 8,000-piece collection of objects and artworks from the Stone Age to the present.

The first half of the workshop, which will run from 3 to 5, will explore the craft and culture of native dream-catchers and lead participants to fashion their own. The second half will introduce Shinnecock Nation dance practices, including a performance of both traditional and contemporary dances and a presentation on their history.

Mr. Weeks, a multidisciplinary artist and cultural consultant, was born on the Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton. His sense of responsibility to better his tribe has inspired travels up and down the East Coast to American and Canadian reservations to study the history and culture of other native peoples.

An outdoor reception will take place from 5 to 6. Reservations are required for the workshop and can be made at watermillcenter.org.
